MORRINSVILLE HISTORY FAIR
>——————————-
Science+ (Maths, Technology)
often in the first term (assuming there is an organiser)
Social Studies+ (Music, Art)
often in the fourth term
Fairs are fantastic learning opportunities for parents and children!
They are all-inclusive, full age range, and non-competitive.
Homeschooling children don’t often get an opportunity to display their work to other people – so here is your big chance. You do not need to be an expert in the subject to participate.
Aim for an interactive exhibit – get people involved as they walk past, have a quiz, play a game, ask them a question [to find something in your exhibit?].
IDEA : Take some photos of your child with their display, and store them in a folder with the participation certificate. You could send a clear, captioned .jpg photo to THEN newsletter editor for the next newsletter.
Parental Involvement
Parents can be involved around the edges :
- in helping to define and limit the chosen topic;
- bringing out the options for topic and display;
- encouragement along the way;
- wise use of the computer;
- keeping the child to the child-written plan for completion;
- transportation to the library and event hall
- the usual stuff for home educators!!
Science – Term One
Science – tries to find solutions to problems or situations
Older children may prefer to make a hypothesis and do experiments and reach a conclusion, like “proper” Science Fairs; this would be great – we would all learn from it, but this is not essential. Younger children can start with a question to find the answer to. The idea is to have fun learning about a science topic of your choice and then show us what you learned.
NOTE: Parents do NOT need to be Science experts!
Mathematics – poses and presents problems
Technology - seeks to solve everyday problems
Social Studies – Term Four
Social Studies – anything (interactive) that deals with people
and how they interact with other people or their environment [natural or man-made]. It bridges history and geography.
Music - could look at a period of music or style, or composer.
Also can book in for [up to] 10 minute recital/ ‘busking’ slot.
Art – Choose about 5 paintings, sculptures, photographs, or other media to display.
Have a binding idea thread in the display. Some ideas might be:
· Explore faces, profiles or
· Experiment with sources of light or
· Explore monochromatic colours, eg red orange yellow, in your display or
· Experiment with texture etc
Get in and give it a go!
